Owned by the two Simons behind the Simons nightclub, this place would always have ambitions beyond eatery. However, touting Ronni Mortensen in the kitchen, Michelin-star pedigree from AOC and Geranium, this is far from being just another bling-bling party restaurant.

Not that there aren’t plenty of nightclubby gimmicks: unmarked door (ring the golden bell for entry), black-on-black decor, even a two-person women’s loo for girlfriends to go wee together. Heck, weekend reservations are taken by email only, to allow the owners to compose the right mix of people; worthy guests are then granted golden cards for access to Simons later on.

Food-wise, it’s an unorthodox fusion of Nordic, French and more exotic cuisines. It’s playful, ambitious, and surprisingly well executed given the relatively reasonable price level. A mix of small and larger dishes, you can go à la carte or, if you’re feeling particularly carnivorous, opt for the Bush Meat menu which is shared among the entire table.

Whatever you choose, make sure to leave room for the single dessert option which is the sort of stuff that prepubescent wet dreams are made of: one monster helping from a spectacular dessert trolley that would make Willy Wonka proud. Follow up with cocktails at the bar.

While not completely inappropriate for business dinners or romantic dates, you might want to restrict those to mid-week. You see, Congo may have no African connections besides its name, but on weekend nights it’s all monkey business here.
