You might associate cava with sun in the fun in Barcelona but the Danes do like to call themselves the Latins of Scandinavia. They certainly guzzle the bubbly stuff with as much gusto as the Spanish and the outdoor Cava Bar stand at Torvehallerne has been the venue of choice during warmer months.

Cava Bar Mar y Montaña is the lively sister venue by Nikolaj Plads, just off Strøget and in a beautiful historical building that dates back to the 18th century. Indoors, it’s not just a place for year-round imbibement of Spanish fizz – the bar stays open continuously throughout the day – but also to fill up on a small plates menu of Catalan gourmet tapas.

Mar y montaña translates into surf’n’turf, and there’s indeed dishes from both sea and land. The chefs really are Spanish and the food really isn’t half bad. Alright, you didn’t come to Copenhagen for tapas. But if you ever needed an excuse to take a break from new Nordic, here’s one: Bottles of cava start at just 180 kroner. Bring some friends, pop a few bottles, and take it from there, olé!
