There might seem to be little reason to innovate if you’ve been keeping a full house since 1877 – yes, that’s right, eighteen seventy-seven – but that’s just what Restaurant Schønnemann has done. Already one of Copenhagen’s most beloved lunch places for smørrebrød, it’s now also possible to stay through the evening at its new wine bar in the back.

The smørrebrød is as classic as it comes and, rather than trying to navigate the mind-baffling assortment of herrings, fish, patés, cold-cuts, cheeses and warm bits, most visitors will be better off with one of the set platters. Chase it down with one of the more than 140 types of snaps and akvavit on the menu – or stay dignified and stick to beer if you’re a lightweight.

Advance booking is a must and, given a choice, you’ll want a late-week spot at the second of the two daily seatings. With no firm ending time, you can eat and drink at a more leisurely pace, then move into the back for a glass or – make it a party – a bottle. With a selection of both classic and natural wines to impress any oenophile, the bar is actually worth a visit by itself. Enter through the courtyard if you didn’t eat.
