Based in the oldest building in Copenhagen, this restaurant has a super classical, almost medieval feel about it thanks to the Gothic arches, royal residents and home to legendary storyteller Hans Christian Andersen.

Classical service without being stuffy, it’s been the local place of reference for gourmet cuisine since it opened back in 1976, maintaining a Michelin star since 1983, and one of those rare places that work equally well for both business or romance.

Chef Thomas Rode Andersen’s food is based on a simplified version of French gastronomy, ostensibly refining classics like langoustines, French boeuf and glazed duck down to their most raw ingredients. Market fresh produce and field-caught game make it on to the menu as the seasons dictate, with salmon patiently smoked for 36 hours in an original oven on-site. Sadly no spit-roast, however.
