For a city as food-focused as Copenhagen, it seemed a travesty that it didn’t have a central market meeting point – until recently, that is. Now you can take your empty bellies and brimming wallets to Torvehallerne for the best Danish delicacies, prime produce and stomach-rumbling stalls.

Opened in 2011 as a solution to Israels Plads, the sorry square that used to hold Copenhagen’s fresh produce market in past times, it’s become a Saturday pastime favourite for gossip and grub as the bustling home to two light-filled glass market halls, home to more than 80 different shops and stands.

More delicatessen store than rustic farmers market, some sell gourmet ingredients to the city’s moneyed classes desperately in need of blue cheese, pricey cupcakes and self-mixed oils, while others cook up more affordable instant fare. And since it’s Danish, the presentation is every bit as sleek as you’d expect.

Grab your food, then a cup of char at tea shop Tante T, shots of caffeine at cult Coffee Collective, or something stronger from microbrewery Gourmet Bryggeriet, and head to the benches and trees lining the courtyard between the two buildings, the perfect place to sit back and enjoy the spoils of your strolls.
