Copenhagen has always had strong craft beer traditions. Beer makers such as Evil Twin, To Øl and Mikkeller were all founded here and considered among the world’s finest. Great. But old hat compared to WarPigs in Kødbyen.

This combined brewhouse and pub is the joint venture between locals Mikkeller and Indiana’s 3 Floyds Brewing Company: a trans-Atlantic union that’s giving enthusiasts serious wood. The name? Well, the Hoosiers are as passionate about heavy metal as their hops, hence the reference to the iconic eight-minute Black Sabbath track.

The place – as everything else in this area, a former slaughterhouse, left virtually unchanged – is set up to allow patrons enjoy truly fresh brews, which means full self-containment. That includes having American yeast specialist White Labs set up their first international facility in the back and a water purification system calibrated to reproduce conditions identical to those found by Lake Michigan. Impressive.

The target group might be metal-loving, beer-guzzling lumberjack hipsters but, nestled between Bakken and Gorilla, the crowd is diverse. All are welcome – there’s room for about 150 inside and another 100 on the benches outside – and with 21 beers and a cocktail on tap, as well as bottles and Texan-style BBQ from the kitchen, there should be something for everybody.
