At the age of 39, Guido Westerwelle became the youngest party chairman of the FDP, the German centre party, in 2001, and openly declared his homosexuality by bringing his hubby, sports event promoter Michael Mronz, to chancellor Angela Merkel’s 50th birthday in 2004.

The pair would become Germany’s new pink power couple in 2009 when Guido became Foreign Minister in the new government and they have since toured the world together, gaying up official state trips to Asia and South America. They’ve been accompanied by family business associates, too, for which Guido has taken some heat. He should’ve known better – even the most senior of Lufthansa trolley dollies only get travel privileges extended to the nearest family.
