Despite its location deep into the gritty area of Neukölln, the Lavanderia Vecchia nonetheless remains one of Berlin’s most popular destination restaurants.

The concept is slightly gimmicky, verging on – dare we say it – the touristy, but not without its charms. Set in the neon-lit inner courtyard of a former laundrette, traditional home-cooked Italian dishes and clotheslines for effect will let you recreate your own Berlin-style Lady and the Tramp spaghetti moment.

45 euros buy you a seat at the set menu dinner feast and includes a series of antipasta, a primo of pasta or risotto, a secondo of fish or meat (alternating by week), dessert, water and drinks – beer or a half-bottle of perfectly drinkable housewine per head (better stuff available for a supplement) – as well as coffee and grappa by the bar.

It’s an all-night affair that starts at 19:30 and goes on till past eleven o’clock, but you can also go at lunchtime when a much lighter (and much cheaper) two or three-course menu can be had. While this isn’t an experience that you’d want to repeat on a weekly basis, for a special occasion it’s a near-guaranteed winner. Advance reservations imperative for dinner.
