Got milk? You don’t need to love mozzarella to come here, but it helps. You don’t need to be quick-witted to decipher the menu, either. Providing a bit of a break from the coffee shops and their slim-hipped patrons in Mitte, Al Cantandino Sotto Le Stelle’s Mozzarella Bar & Bottega – located right next to their restaurant proper – is the perfect snack stop for a ball of the wobbly stuff or a plate of Italian delicatessen.

Choose from a single dollop, in both salty and milder flavours, double up, go smoky, try the buttery soft burrata, or share a plate of five. There are other cheeses, too, from a whole farmyard of different species, should you need to cut the milk with something a little sharper. And leave enough room for the antipastis, which range from simple tomatoes with basil and olives, to whole platters of meaty mortadella, prosciutto, salami and speck best eaten with a hunk of bread and olive oil.

Part of the Slow Food movement in Berlin, they do the hand-made, home-reared thing pretty well here, stocking stuff by small Italian producers. That adds a little to the cost of the cheese – a serving will set you back nearly a tenner – but the sides are budget-friendly extras and the wine well-affordable. Though you won’t leave with a milk moustache, your wallet won’t have been milked dry, either.
