Not without its fair share of polemics, the Mercat del Born is now open to the public once again, 42 years after its closure in 1971. This time though, the historical market place will be peddling art and culture rather than meat, fruit and vegetables.

It’s a somewhat politically charged cultural centre, not least because of the uncovering during restoration of Medieval ruins dating back prior to the Spanish War of Succession in 1701-1714, the painful event that effectively put an end to Catalonia’s independence. The impressive ruins take front and center stage, and expect events and exhibitions to flirt with the region’s cultural identity as well.

However, the main attraction at El Born CC is the building itself, an incredible Modernist structure dating back to the 1870s. Huge and cavernous, take your time to walk around and marvel at the massive cast iron columns and enjoy the delicate details. Browse the excellent bookshop and grab a bite at the Espai Gastronòmic run by Moritz. While in the area, make sure to drop into the incredible Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar.
