Portal de l’Àngel, if you don’t know it, connects Plaça Catalunya to the Gothic Quarter through a string of H&Ms, Desiguals and Zaras. Funnel-shaped, it packs the masses of clueless tourists and suburban trash closer and closer as it gradually narrows, crushing both spirits and shopping bags. It’s high street shopping hell. But from the comfort of the terrace of El Cercle, it’s a sight to behold.

Yes, look up and you should be able to spot a few diners taking enjoyment from your misery, cocktail in hand and a smug expression painted on their faces, though that’s only part of the attraction here. The restaurant is housed on the first floor of the 15th century Palau Pignatelli and, after several years of renovation as well as a culinary reboot, it now also has interiors and a menu worthy of the spectacular setting.

There’s modern Catalan cuisine served in the more formal Les Quatre Estacions dining room and Japanese along La Barra and, even if execution doesn’t always match the ambition level, it’s good. It might not be an obvious destination restaurant – it’s touristy, yes – but still special and just drinks and tapas outdoors in El Jardí (as they call the terrace) can be a pretty sweet plan on a sunny day or a balmy night.
