Fishmonger and restaurateur Joan Soler, also behind the popular Big Fish restaurants, once again combines seafood and cocktails at this looker located in Passatge de la Concepció, the little gastro alley in the sweet spot between Rambla de Catalunya and Passeig de Gràcia.

As you might expect, the menu at Boca Grande is propped with aquatic goodies, from the raw, steamed and marinated sort, like oysters, clams and ceviche, to the grilled and deep-fried variety, like pulpo and pescaditos. Drinks, however, play a much greater part than usual; it’s not always clear whether you’re having nibbles in a cocktail bar or having drinks in a restaurant. (For drinks only, head straight to Boca Chica upstairs.)

Peculiarities like the DJ booth in the unisex bathrooms help reinforce that confusion, but little does it matter: The food coming out of Xavier Tranque’s kitchen (hit or miss, like the service, now that you ask) plays second fiddle to the happening vibe and the unequivocally spectacular decor. Interior design guru Lázaro Rosa-Violán has once again worked his magic (and lots of stuffed animals) with wonderful results.

Exciting, charming, and smoking hot, but slightly unreliable and with issues verging on schizophrenia: Boca Grande is like that hunk that you’re only too happy booty calling but wouldn’t really consider for a serious date. That can still make for some great holiday fun.
