In spite of its proximity to Born, the area of Sant Pere can be rather savage – do take your safety precautions at night – with its crumbly buildings and rampant local gangs. However, you wouldn’t know it once inside here: This spot is just as cosy and affable as the Spanish-Argentinean rom-com it’s named after.

Elsa y Fred has been set up by sisters Camila and Sofía and although ‘gastrobar’ may sound better reserved for places like Ferran Adrià’s Tickets, the third founder is the aptly named Ramón Miracle, formerly chef at nearby Bestiari, who does produce small wonders in the kitchen. Gastro tapas? They’re definitely a cut above the usual deepfried stuff.

You’ll find veal carpaccio with foie and mango, a delicious tuna tartare and succulent honey-and-soy glazed ribs. The wine marinated oxtail burger is exquisite. And although there are classics like patatas bravas, croquetas and pa tomàquet, they’re impeccably presented and have been perfected with small twists and refinements.

The place is open every day of the week from breakfast to evening cocktails, with jazz nights on Tuesdays, but it’s particularly on Sundays that it makes for the perfect hangout, not least because they take reservations. Book a table, and although the brunch menu is only served until 4pm, leave the tab open and keep a steady flow of drinks and dishes coming for the rest of the afternoon.
