Yes, it does sound like the title of a Hallmark card and no, it does not come with a Michael Bublé backing track. But Moments is the big-draw dining experience at the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona with food for thought and promises of recollections of more than just the exorbitant bill.

With the restaurant’s two Michelin stars, Raül Balam is possibly the world’s only openly gay chef awarded a double dose of those, though the menu still carries the distinct signature of his mother. As that mum happens to be Carme Ruscalleda – the one of Sant Pau, with no less than five of the Michelin twinklies to her name – it means an updated take on the traditional Catalan cuisine.

Here ‘updated’ translates roughly into a play with the texture and flavours but – unlike the molecular gastronomy of Ferran Adrià – keeping the dish fully recognisable. Tuck into delicacies such as stuffed pigeon, colt-horse steak and Saint Pierre fish, and two-staged desserts so complicated you’ll need to order them on arrival to make sure they’re ready when you are.

Of course, if you only have a little moment to spare, you can condense the experience with the lunch menu Tuesdays to Fridays. Conversely, if you just can’t choose, try the tasting menu. Whether you’ll be able to afford them is another matter. Unfortunately the Mandarin’s Banker’s Bar isn’t in the loans business.
