The original Federal Café in Sant Antoni remains one of the best brunch spots in town, but the queue for a table on weekends can be a painful test of patience. While the touristy location of Federal Café Gòtic – close to the Columbus statue, just off the Ramblas – mean that waits won’t be much shorter at this second Barcelona outlet, at least it might save you a walk.

Regulars will recognise the window sill seats. They brilliantly turn the place into an indoor-outdoor space whenever the weather permits. The menu is also unchanged, meaning tasty, eco-friendly all-day breakfast and brunch dishes, from müesli to baked eggs and the signature ‘morning burger’, as well as a spread of baked goods. Same thing with drinks; everything to keep you hydrated and/or boozed up.

As a venue it gets nowhere near the natural charm of its pretty sister but it’s still an eminently pleasant spot and they’ve also managed to keep the friendly, laid-back vibe. While away a few hours with friends on weekends or with a magazine (plenty of reading material provided) and vermut by yourself during the week.
