Inspired by New York's legendary Beige to put the preen back in queen, Sunday @ Café Etienne Marcel has become a fortnightly must for the fashion set of gay Paris at the Costes brothers’ haunt, and it's still going strong in 2012.
Eat from the funky menu – they do a mean burger and some of the best french fries in town – or journey straight to the centre of the sound system in the back bar, where drinks are served from a jutting wooden plank stack. Très chic. Etienne Marcel, after all, is a design den that pulls no punches. Hanging wires from futuristic light fittings; multicoloured plastic pod chairs; white moulded surfaces calling to mind a Kubrick moon base. On a balmy evening, however, the large corner terrace is the place to hang out. Full use is made of the space as music pulsates through the panes.
The drinks list is as international as the crowd but the price tag isn’t duty free. The swanky event puts the high end in high society and is a place where you can never knowingly be underdressed. Just the place to see, be scene and rubberneck at the glorious guys. Unashamedly snooty, the place is a sight to behold – worth at the very least an anthropological outing.
