Part of Le Relais group of hotels, Standard may have gotten the sad end of the straw with this rather Travel Lodge-esque name when compared to its comrades, the Chat Noir and Colour Design Hotels. However, get past the branding and you’ve actually got quite a high-design little number, featuring the work of up and coming young designers on every floor, and a clean (yet not characterless) monochrome colour scheme accented by swathes of bright neons. Comfortable rooms with all the expected mod-cons are within easy access of the Bastille Quarter’s lively attractions.

Nestled in a quiet street close to the Marais district and a few steps from the Place de la Bastille, this hotel is in an unmistakably desirable location. Take a stroll to appreciate this historic Parisian quarter, from the Faubourg Saint Antoine to Place des Vosges, from Notre Dame to Opéra Bastille, and all the bars, restaurants, theatres and fashion boutiques in the surrounding area.

Minimal is the natural style for low-budget boutiques, and white the natural color; in the Standard’s case the owner spent some time in Spain, and there’s more than a little Iberian style to these largely monochrome rooms, livened with judiciously applied touches of color. The accommodations are comfortable enough; they’re not luxurious by any stretch but nor do they feel cheap, which is quite an achievement in this price range.
