The French appear to be having an illicit love affair with America – and word’s getting out. Not only are the two swapping frites and fries, now they’ve gone public with a restaurant that fuses the two cultures’ respective foodstuffs.
Just a few doors down the street from hipster central Hôtel Amour in the bobo-inhabited 9th, you’ll find La Maison Mere serving ‘American comfort food and classic French fare’. Interiors-wise it’s like stepping foot in a NYC bistro, all white tiles and vintage refrigerators, though the Gauls have had their way with the farmhouse furniture. Open until 2am most weekdays, it’s already pulling in a busy nightly crowd with hipsters clamouring to get a seat here.
Choose from Eggs Benedict, meatloaf and of course, burgers from the stateside portion, or keep it local with Aubrac steak and leek vinaigrette. Some critics have claimed the new Franco-American detente isn’t working out too well, whilst others have lauded the return to Paris of a proper hamburger bun and well-cooked mince. You’ll have to head down yourself to make up your mind.
