If you enjoy your eats bucolic, head for the Hôtel du Nord at Canal St Martin where this buzzing eaterie opens onto the leafy lock. This hipsters’ haven offers an easy menu of well designed dishes (and some well-shaken cocktails). The focus is lite but undeniably Gallic.
It may not be haute cuisine but this is the venue that inspired Marcel Carné’s namesake 1930s black and white classic. “Atmosphere! Atmosphere!”, the interwar gay icon screen siren Arletty famously screeched in the movie, and that’s the catchphrase that totally reflects the vibe here.
The cavernous interior throbs ambience and on a sunny day the outdoor terrace is the perfect spot for enjoying the two starter-two mains formule – starters like garnished melon and ham and main courses such as a tasty filet of sea bass and courgettes – which is chalked up on the blackboard and brought to the large tables. Night time is part food, part conversation, all boho buzz.
