Les croissants, le café, le crusty baguette avec le fromage – you’d think the French had it made with their lunch/brunch staples, but instead an influx of American and anglo-style eateries is creating ever-increasing buzz in Paris.
It’s a wave this Marais café is riding prettily, creating plenty of buzz of its own among locals with its very NYC white-tiled walls, SMEG fridge and stacked glass cases, whilst the signage is reminiscent of England’s popular Peyton & Byrne cake shops.
And cakes are indeed the forte of Merce and the Muse – unsurprising, given it was originally intended to be a cupcake shop, until American-Iranian founder and owner Merce Muse got slightly derailed by sandwiches, quiches, salads and les Rice Krispie Treats.
Take a seat on the flea-market furniture, grab a vintage magazine and munch on a hearty muffin, strawberry scone or pistachio brownie while sipping coffee from The Coffee Collective, the Danish java bean fanatics. Then head next door to Mary’s for a frozen gelato treat before urgently hitting the gym.
