The last place you might expect to find a ‘Hidden Cafe’, as this spot’s name implies, is in a former municipal funeral parlour. But there you have it – tucked away inside the always interesting 104 (‘Le Centquatre’) arts centre that now makes use of the space, is Café Caché.

Make your way past the Western entrance where a Heath Robinson merry-go-round stands sentinel, and head inside where a Yo Sushi!-style conveyor belt installation should get your taste buds tingling. Passersby are invited to jump on board, though we’re not endorsing cannibalism, clearly.

Fusiony tapas and sampling size dishes are the order of the day, offered up individually or in batches of three. Choices include chicory, bacon and nut salad, beetroot, avocado and ginger or maybe goat’s cheese, courgette and a confit of red peppers. Sunday brunch comes in a Scandi (fishy) or Anglosaxon (bacon-y) version, with eggs, tasty scones, fruit and drinks.

If that’s all too fussy for your taste, take your pick from toasted sandwiches or something from the pizza truck to tuck into in the woodsy canteen-style surroundings or while working on your tan in the delightful courtyard. You can always head back to that sushi train if you’re not quite sated.
