This most Gallic of French sports outfitters has just opened a new space in the buzzing Montorgueil quartier. The two-level outlet offers the full range of gear for those who get up and go, from trainers and sweatshirts to t-shirts and a cooling drink in the first floor drinks bar. Upstairs is always where you’ll find the funky buvette which features, pride of the place, a rotisserie display of trainers – the trademark gag of this house of sporting apparel.
It’s a tongue-in-cheek retail moment with serious style and intent which truly deserves a ringing cock-a-doodle-doo – or cocorico as the French would crow. An original feature is the alcove fitting room: At one end of this curtain-free space is a stool and at the other a sofa, where the second opinion can hold court and be heeded or overruled. The surface is tiled for easy cleaning should differences of opinions on style choices turn ugly.
Sporting figurines and assorted multicoloured cockerels plus a souvenir peloton of cycling memorabilia and pictures of sporting glory moments are on display behind the till. After all, Le Coq Sportif links itself closely to the sporting history and aligns itself with the hunks of the world of cycling. No bad thing!
