If you’re not in the market for high design and couture cladding but still fancy a little fun, Hotel Mayet pushes all the right buttons. With low room rates it’s hardly concierge service central, but the communal rooms are bright, cheerful spaces covered in graffiti by local artists, whilst functional guestrooms are kept simple and clean in a grey and red colour scheme. Breakfast is included and can be taken back to bed from the buffet counter, and though space isn’t exactly at a premium, its location near Monparnasse means you’re unlikely to spend much time here anyway. For once, size doesn’t matter.

17.0 of 20. In this case we’re not talking about the kind of haute-luxury minimalism that fills the pages of the interior design magazines. The Mayet is perhaps brighter, more cheerful, more colorful and eclectic than what we’re used to seeing; there are options around Paris if you’d like to stay somewhere more sober and grown-up, and pay twice as much while you’re at it.
