It’s a testament to the winning combination of Starck-design and Club Med alumnus Trigano’s caring/sharing ethos, that this former garage has got the hip kids coming back to one of Paris’ lesser frequented Arrondissements for more than the obligatory pilgrimage to Jim Morrison’s grave. Quirky interiors include graffiti walls, tree trunk stools and plastic mask lamp-shades, belying the simple, seven storey cream façade outside. ‘Yo Mama’s so fat’ jokes aside, the 172 rooms range in size from the simple Mama to the Mama Suite, all complete with requisite high-count linens, rain-head showers and state of the art i-tech. Live acts and international DJs frequent the bar at night, whilst guests are encouraged to interact around the communal dining table, made up of 6 glass encased TV screens. As they say; Mama knows best.

Splendia
Newly created by the founders of the Club Med and French philosopher, Cyril Aouizerate, Mama Shelter was designed by Philippe Starck to offer an eclectic and electric ambiance thanks to its friendly, warm and casual common areas. The hotel is housed in a new building in the rapidly-changing Charonne district of Paris' 20th arrondissement, a once gritty working-class area previously overlooked by the hotel industry but becoming popular as an alternative to the more touristic central districts. Cyril Aoizerate and his company Urbantech's philosophy was to integrate Mama Shelter into its local environment; this is achieved mainly with the common areas, and the exterior, which look like apartments.

17.0 of 20. It’s a motley crew behind this place: owners include some Club Med co-founders, as well as a French philosopher; the banlieue activist-architect Roland Castro reclaimed the space from a former life as a parking garage; and the one and only Philippe Starck lent his own inimitable brand of design sense to the interiors.
