Hotels can often be anything but a home away from home, especially in a city known more for its emphasis on perfect style than genial hospitality. However you’ll find only eleven rooms, with space for two on each floor, in this formerly residential 19th century townhouse. Designed by yet another Starck alumn, Bruno Borrione, the feel is contemporary and light filled, with beautiful tree-lined wallpaper, lots of clean whites and chrome accents. Each level has its own colour scheme, be it almond green, monochrome or ochre, and is reached by cute little lifts for two from the gorgeous ground floor courtyard where you can take breakfast amongst the olive trees. There’s no in-house restaurant, but the Saint Germain area around the 6th arrondissement offers plenty of alternatives, including the acclaimed Restaurant Hélène Darroze.

Mr & Mrs Smith

With just 11 rooms stacked neatly into a 19th-century townhouse, this luxury boutique hotel in Paris has the feel of an exclusive members’ club. Bright minimalist interiors with colour accents and walnut veneers maximise natural light – Le Placide’s designer Bruno Borrione certainly knows how to pretty up a hotel room. Add a chic address in Saint-Germain, and you’ve got the perfect place to base a whirlwind city break.
