Orientalism and a Wunderkammer collector’s mentality, locked up in 18th century France makes damn sure Hotel Daniel stays as far away from the minimalist design aesthetic so prevalent in the hotel industry today. Romantic chinoiserie wall frescoes form the backdrop for an impressive collection of curiosities and antique treasures in the communal rooms, whilst guest suites are downy, comfortable and perhaps slightly over-stuffed with toile-de-jouey wallpaper, mother of pearl inlaid furniture and velvet brocade upholstery. However, its aim to inspire passion for travel and far-away lands (perhaps thanks to its Lebanese owners) can’t fail but get you in the holiday mood. Luckily it’s more decadent escape than backpacking grunge, with green tea and Ladurée macaroons served in-room on arrival and a delightful staff who seem to genuinely care for your comfort. Now there’s a curiosity.

Mr & Mrs Smith
Exotically styled by Tarfa Salam, Hôtel Daniel’s lavish decor mixes beautiful Toile de Jouy, hand-painted wallpapers and Oriental carpets with a sea green palette to create a whimsical and elegant concoction of Chinoiserie. Opening each door is like flicking through the pages of a traveller’s diary. The exquisite interiors will have you dreaming of faraway places – but a quick glance outside brings you back to modern Paris, where the chic boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants of the Champs-Elysées await.
