This recent opening joins ranks with La Fidelité and Chez Jeanette as a favoured hipster destination in the groovy 10th Arrondissement, and boasts an impressive Bright Young Thing per square metre rating.
Le Pompon’s ground level cocktail lounge is panelled in dark wood and randomly crammed with tables, chairs and, for the lucky few, comfy Chesterfields. Along the back wall is a bar staffed by male model types with sharp haircuts and white t-shirts, just tight enough to keep the is he/isn’t he guessing game going.
Downstairs, through two sets of doors for sound proofing, is where things get looser, in the New York speakeasy-style basement, complete with an imported copper ceiling. This is where the less inhibited of Paris’ fashion & style set dance and get it on, egged on by live performances and crafty DJs.
Part owned by boy-about-town Charaff Tajer, from artsy creative collective Pain O ChoKolat, the former synagogue isn’t a gay bar as such, but upholds its spiritual heritage as a temple to the strand of metrosexuality that grants gay men a divine right to check out young hotties. Amen to that.
