If your idea of paying tribute to the Declaration of Independence involves dancing with half naked men and a boatload of trannies, then head straight to the Pines: The Independence Day weekend traditionally marks the first of the summer’s three big summer Fire Island Pines parties as well as the annual tranny invasion from Cherry Groves.
The now cancelled Bay Dance followed the standard Fire Island party mould of an open air venue and exorbitantly priced tickets, with the most distinguishing features being its sunset time slot – the Pines Party is a night affair and Ascension Party takes place during the day – and guaranteed fireworks at the end of the night (a Fire Island first?). Still going strong and much less uptight (and less costly) is the Invasion of the Pines in the marina on July 4.
Prancing and strutting is the norm on the ferry landing here any day, but there will be more feathers, sequins and boas than on a regular weekend for the annual rite of drag queens ferrying over from neighbouring Cherry Grove for a red carpet “invasion” of Fire Island Pines. It marks an incident back in 1976 – now you’re encouraged to create your own. The main party is at the Ice Palace in Cherry Grove, but plenty of activity in the Pines marina.
