Whilst most people will look through their photographic history and see a fairly stable succession from child to spotty teenager to adult, Cindy Sherman’s personal portraits tell a different story entirely.
As the subject of her own work for more than 40 years, Sherman has posed as various characters in a myriad of guises, using wigs, makeup, costumes and prosthesis to transform from carnival freak to soft core porn star and everything in between.
This amazing retrospective features some of her stand-out series: appearing as Hollywood style heroines in black and white-style film stills, as classic aristocrats and clergymen in old master portraiture style, and freakish society paintings depicting an overwhelming preoccupation with ageing, wealth and status.
Exploring the varying roles of women and the stereotyping of females in society, you’ll be lamenting your own scant self-portraiture in the next family get-together. Turn up as a circus freak and mix it up a little.
