Developed by Jason Pomeranc of 60 Thompson fame, this luxurious, glassy 22-storey high-rise is in stark contrast to the dingy, funky LES bars and boutiques that surround it. The 141 modern, yet industrial rooms showcase floor-to-ceiling windows with impressive views of lower Manhattan. The crowd tends to be rowdy but still full of corporate creative types. Besides a well-stocked mini bar and Kiehl’s products, expect a “Kiki de Montparnasse Sensuality Kit” equipped with two silk strips with the word “handcuffs” printed on them, a small vibrator, condom and lube, all for the un-sexy price of $195. Shell out cash for the room and skip the vibrator – head to a Duane Reade pharmacy for the rest.

18.0 of 20. It’s uncharted territory for hotels, perhaps, but familiar ground for nightlife. The Thompson doesn’t just take advantage of the local buzz, it aims to contribute its own: Shang, the upscale Chinese restaurant and associated lounge, is the culinary focal point, and Above Allen, the open-air bar with the retractable roof, is bound to become a downtown fixture for members and hotel guests. And when the weather agrees, the outdoor pool is set to open — not many other downtown hotels can say something like that.
