Literally one minute away from Times Square, Room Mate Grace offers some of the best accommodation in Midtown in terms of location, value and style. Rooms are small, but efficiently organized and clean, with comfy beds and free WiFi. No mini-bar or room service, but there is a 24-hour beverage store (alcohol until 4am) and a great complimentary breakfast. Bring your bathing suit: an indoor swimming pool with a swim-up window to the lobby bar provides a nice break from summertime in the city, and the hopping poolside parties have been making a splash.

This cheap-chic boutique hotel is just what you’d expect from that most artful of lodgers, André Balazs. The wood panelling and cubic modern furniture at Hotel Grace have a whisper of chalet about them, but you can still sense that you’re inches from Times Square, in the middle of Manhattan. Though the bedrooms aren’t huge (after all, this is New York City), the bed is kingsize. In fact, half the room is sleepable on. There may not be any bathtub to wallow in, but the fact that there’s a pool in the lobby is good compensation.

18.0 of 20. Though this is Times Square, you won’t see the usual tourists in souvenir shirts. Instead expect young arts-and-media types, up-and-coming musicians, and anyone else with Mercer style and a Holiday Inn budget. Youth hostels were one inspiration, but we’ve never seen a hostel with free wi-fi, flat-screen televisions, DVD players and Egyptian cotton bedding. Rooms for four are available, with twin bunk beds and an LCD screen in each bunk, perfect for a traveling band or four very close friends.
