After a tough fight with Anna Wintour, the latest hotspot from Serge Becker (also behind La Esquina and Café Select) has opened in her backyard. Suitably, however, the waiters all look like Vogue model material, and the clientele follow suit with hotties trotting downtown. So even if eye candy is the only kind of calorie you’re happy to imbibe, you’re about to put on some serious weight at Miss Lily’s.
Packed into a smallish space, the Jamaican retro joint serves up Caribbean cuisine including jerk chicken, goat curry, coconut pancakes, spiced pumpkin soup, and grilled fish sandwiches. They do takeout too, with carrot slices, banana cream pudding and rum cake with coconut cream making regulars out of the daily drop-ins, but you really don’t want to miss the scene inside.
Chow down on plantain chips in an orange booth in the diner-style front room, or head for a proper meal in the more atmospheric – and louder – back room, plastered with old school reggae album covers. Reservations for dinner are a must as queues can get ridiculous and the door policy borders on pretentious, but get inside and you’ll end the night bumping and grinding to ska and dancehall beats with NYC’s most beautiful.
