It may be slightly incongruously located in the depths of a furniture store – though possibly NYC’s finest – but then, nothing gets the appetite going like a little luxe leather corner piece does it? Inch past the interiors and find the Hamptons country-chic space strewn with wildflowers and white wood, which feels as squeaky clean and good-for-you as the food courtesy of chef Dan Kluger.
Run your finger down the recycled paper menu (stuck to an old cardboard box for good recycling measure), and enjoy a grilled chicken Waldorf salad or a whole wheat pizza for lunch punctuated with a house-brewed soda. If you’re counting digits as well as learning the alphabet, then check out the $28 prix fixe menu with three edited courses on offer.
Take advantage of the full menu at dinner time – small it isn’t; there appears to be a lot you can do with a veg or two (roasted kabocha squash and ricotta toast, anyone?). Explore the array of greens before ordering one of the mains like black sea bass or braised halibut. Light dishes that won’t leave you so full to live in fear of knocking the feather stuffing out of your new sofa.
Part of Jean-Georges Vongerichten‘s empire (Vong, Spice Market, Perry Street), everything at ABC Kitchen promises to be farm-fresh, locally sourced, seasonal and organic with a wholesomeness rating to rival Sesame Street. The clientele, however, you would not meet in a trash can; this is where the moneyed classes come to get a taste of the farm and feel righteous while doing it.
