Like a Pied Piper of the restaurant world, Keith McNally has blown his magic whistle all over New York and brought the punters running, turning often derelict areas into destinations from the original Odeon in TriBeCa to Nell’s on 14th Street. His latest venture is the bustling pizzeria Pulino’s, crammed at the best of times with a mix of downtown hipsters, after-hours bankers and a scrum of people jostling for space at the neatly packed bar.
Tables on the chequerboard floor are hard to come by as the crowds surge in for the perfect thin-crust pizzas covered in pesto or tomato bases before being dolloped with ingredients from breakfast (with eggs, and a choice of bacon, spinach, mushroom and sausage) to dinner (how about some meatballs and pickled chili).
Brunch is a better option, when on warmer days one of the walls is slid open and the sidewalk breeze and dappled sunlight streams in over mozzarella burratas, roasted mussels and nutella pizzas sprinkled with sea salt and extra virgin olive oil.
Meat eaters will love the in-house slaughtering conducted in the basement to make rustic pork belly dishes and expertly cured prosciutto slices, whilst customer’s loitering around past midnight can get hold of the daily offering of 30 LaFrieda burgers – NYC’s most famous haute-patty - and only available at McNally’s eateries. How’s that for keeping ‘em coming?
