With the amount of faddish ‘farm-to-table’ restaurants appearing, it’s amazing someone hasn’t installed a petting zoo where you can cuddle the critters before they reappear on your plate minutes later. Short of that, Goat Town gets many of its greens from its vegetable garden in the backyard.
Tick off sustainability and you’re left with an atmospheric Alphabet City bistro. Scoot into one of the white-tiled booths, hum along to the 80s hits busting out from the turntable and soon feel like an East Village local in the kitsch-rustic, tin-ceilinged space.
Chef Jessica Wilson adds experimental twists to a sprawling menu, changed frequently to incorporate fresh seasonal produce but revolving around American classics such as braised short ribs, cast iron organic chicken with fries and the crowd-pleasing burger. Slimy bits are available year-round from the central oyster bar.
Good for dinner, brunch is when the place excels. Stop by for a Goat Town Bloody Mary with herb-infused sake; the pork belly ranchero will make you glad you didn’t get a chance to make buddies with Babe after all. Some things are best left in the country.
