We rather wish this penthouse bar atop Andre Balazs’ Standard Hotel had stuck with its initial name, the Boom Boom Room – it would’ve made the triangular hot tub in the middle of the main room much more inviting. As it stands, the club has been renamed as the Top of The Standard, and pretty much does what it says on the tin. Having attracted the likes of Madonna and La Lohan to its opening in 2009, it now operates a hideously strict door policy for entry into the two retro inspired rooms, decked out in wavy beige baguettes, glittering gold chandeliers, pod-like fireplaces and, of course, floor to ceiling windows from which to enjoy the 360 degree views of Manhattan and the Hudson. The only problem is getting in – even paying hotel guests are politely booted out by 9pm so they can reopen at 10 for celebrities and private parties. If you’re not on the list, you’d better be fabulous. And very fabulous.
