The Carlyle opened in 1930 as a fabulous upper crust hotel. It has since undergone a bit of a facelift, not unlike most of the ladies in this Upper East Side neighborhood. Despite the sleek changes, this hotel is as classy and lovely as ever, still maintaining that historic New York glamour. Rooms are beautiful and comfortable, making you feel as if you were a guest in someone’s home. Café Carlyle is a classic spot to catch jazz singers and cabaret acts, while Bemelmans Bar is a more clubby, people-watching spot.

18.0 of 20. Recent renovations have added almost nothing new, merely heightening the time-travel feel of the place, returning the original shine to the distinctly British Empire interiors. The Carlyle can’t be bothered to notice recent ‘developments’ in the hospitality industry; this is a place that clearly operates under the assumption that last century’s hoteliers got it right, and that discreet and old-fashioned service goes a long way—sadly almost a novel idea at this point.
