The first East Coast branch of this Seattle-based hipster hotel features rooms designed to feel like cool apartments, decorated in garage sale chic – think full-sized Smeg refrigerators, turntables in every room, a photo booth in the foyer, and artwork all over the place.
Rates start from USD 99 for a big room with bunk beds (that’s right, you won’t be getting laid) to suites up to USD 1,000. Compared to other boutique hotels in New York City, the Ace is actually a pretty good deal – as long as you don’t mind staying in an upscale dorm room. Sleek and grand it is not, laid back and economical it is.
The hotel also benefits from the new in-house John Dory Oyster Bar and popular Breslin Bar & Dining Room (both from the people who run John Dory and The Spotted Pig), and the sceney, stuffed lobby with sofas scattered full of free Wi-Fi pilchers from all walks of business-life making the most of the unassuming atmosphere, just slick-enough surroundings and, at night, hopping bar.

Mr & Mrs Smith
Bursting onto the NYC boutique-hotel scene with a thrum of guitar strings and a bohemian shrug, Ace Hotel New York is one for the creatives, with turntables in every room, scrawlable chalkboard walls and a youthful air of hipster chic.

18.5 of 20. After some years making a name for itself on the West Coast, the Ace brand arrives in the East, with a New York outpost on Broadway at 29th Street. And, as you’d expect, this one is a little bit different from other New York hotels. Start with the location: while you’re in the middle of Manhattan, and about three seconds from basically anywhere, this particular section of Broadway in the upper 20s is off most tourists’ radar, and most property developers’ as well. This is one way the Ace manages to stick to its budget-friendly price point, and makes for a bit of colorful street life as well.
