Replicating his successful formula of good design and clever details from The Standard’s sister hotels in LA and Miami, André Balazs brand new concrete slab is very much reminiscent of a work by Le Corbusier. The 20-storey building includes 337 rooms, a restaurant and beer garden on the ground floor, and a bar and a lounge on the top two floors. The rooms themselves are outfitted in a Mod decor, with one wall of floor-to-ceiling windows offering great river or city vistas and a view over the city’s newest park, The High Line, which straddles the hotel. If the penthouse Boom Boom Room bar is too sceney for your liking, the mini bar has all you need to make your own party, including ingredients to make margaritas, cosmos and mojitos. Now you’ll just have to find a way to circumvent the ‘one guest per room’ policy introduced after the vibe got a tad too cheerful.

Mr & Mrs Smith
The latest creation of super-hotelier Andre Balazs, the eagerly anticipated Standard NY meets expectations and then some. It’s a glorious glassy high-rise lording it over the Meatpacking District, with witty minimalist interiors, sexy exhibitionist bathrooms, and gob-smacking views.

18.0 of 20. The Standard looks more or less like a slightly bent UN building on stilts, straddling the High Line, the elevated railway that’s in the process of becoming lower Manhattan’s new green paradise. Even the interiors feel a bit utopian, decked out in a retro-future style that pays homage to Scandinavian mid-century modernism — a welcome departure from the faux-Romantic grittiness that seems to prevail in the Meatpacking District.
