The Mercer (sister property to LA’s Chateau Marmont) has 75 bright and airy rooms with high ceilings, dark wood, fluffy beds and big bathtubs. Located on a stylish corner in the heart of SoHo, the gracious and gorgeous staff will make sure you are as well taken care of as the A-list celebrity checking in next to you. If you want a small hotel that treats you like an honored guest, you can’t go wrong here. Have a coffee in the smartly-designed Lobby as you try not to stare at Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, whilst amazing restaurants, shopping and Marc Jacobs smoking a cigarette are all literally steps away. If you can afford to, treat yourself and splurge on a loft studio, though it’s likely you may never meet your check-out time.

Mr & Mrs Smith
A six-storey red-brick Romanesque revival landmark building, New York boutique hotel The Mercer is the perfect fit for its SoHo locale. The property’s exposed brick walls and enclaves, neutral hues and hardwood floors go with the area’s cast-iron and glass sidewalks every bit as well as pastrami does with rye. It’s a modern New York classic, with a very Manhattan air of effortless cool.

19.0 of 20. Walking into the lobby/library (not a gimmick—you can check the books out) is like walking into the apartment of that same designer friend of yours—pale leather screens, worn Turkish carpet, leather banquettes and low oval coffee tables. The rooms have a nice secular touch—no Bibles, just Paper magazine—while bathrooms feature stark white tiles, deliciously soft Frette towels and hip Face Stockholm beauty products. Ask for a room where the Scandinavian blonde wood partitions dividing bedroom and bathroom slide open and voila, you're having a soak just steps away from your plush, inviting bed. To be frank, the arrangement (the cube shaped tubs easily fit two) is conducive to frolicking, as are the huge walk-in showers and the six-foot mirrors. (Yes, there are complimentary mints and condoms alongside the shampoo.)
