This cool and cozy hotel, located on a street previously known as a punk hangout rather than a boutique hotel address, is full of charm and personality. The team behind The Maritime Hotel have brought a boho-cool atmosphere to a once sketchy location, with eclectically designed rooms, hardwood floors, heavy vintage furnishings, and lots of natural light, making it feel more guesthouse than hotel. But don’t think it’s all granny-chic: along with the old comes the new, as rooms are equipped with iPod stereos, flat screen TVs and Apple laptops with free Internet access. The Lobby Bar has become the place to be, complete with interesting taxidermy and hipsters from all over.

Mr & Mrs Smith
Five years ago, no one would have looked to the Bowery for Manhattan’s hottest boutique hotel, but the one-time skid row has come up trumps with this irrepressible hipster hangout. The Bowery Hotel’s light, bright bedrooms capture the classic style of New York apartments (complete with moodily lit tiled corridors), and its art-deco-inspired Lobby bar is a homey, wood-panelled haven from the unsleeping city.

19.0 of 20. And praiseworthy it certainly is. Like The Hotel on Rivington, it’s an incongruously tall building in a low-rise neighborhood (for the time being at least), so the views from the open-plan loft-style rooms show a side of the East Village that’s rarely seen. Rooms are swanky, with generous space, fine linens, iPods, and top-shelf bath products.
