The long-awaited opening of the Gansevoort’s sister hotel on Park Avenue has finally taken place – and boy was it worth it. Sure, the location is non-descript (major neighbourhood attraction: Curry Hill’s Indian restaurants), but it hasn’t lost its fun-loving downtown roots.
The place is built to wow from the facade’s colour-changing glass column to the huge aubergine-coloured lobby chandeliers and the soft porn artwork by Deborah Anderson that spice up everything from the bar to the side-tables, but the real stunner is undeniably the tri-level Plunge Rooftop Bar + Lounge playground. With a 40ft indoor-outdoor pool (heated for all-year use and open to non-guests after 6:30pm), loungers can splish in the water, splash out on cocktails, or simply enjoy the best views in town of the Empire State Building.
As at the downtown location, service aims to please –24 hour fitness centre, complimentary Wi-Fi and Porsche courtesy cars form part of the package – and the rooms are similarly lush with their high ceilings and open-framed four poster beds. The food & beverage offering will soon also include the two-tier Twenty33 lobby cocktail bar serving Prohibition-style drinks, and Marco Porceddu’s new Italian eatery Asellina. That may sound like a bootylicious Bronx import but is a name taken from a Pompeiian woman who ran a brothel above her tavern. Puts the whole Dutch moniker in context now, doesn’t it? But what will the WASPs make of it?
