A poor man’s paradise, Jones Beach is an easy summer getaway from Manhattan on a hot day, and Long Island’s most accessible and popular beach. Pack a lunch (food options on the beach are limited and greasy), head to the sandy dunes, and surf on the Atlantic side or enjoy sheltered waters on the bay. The third stop on the shuttle bus from the train station puts you within walking distance of the gay section of the beach. Facing the sea, turn left and keep walking until speedos outnumber boardshorts. The Jones Beach Theatre also hosts cool outdoor concerts during the summer months.
To get there, it’s approximately one hour from Penn Station until you hit the sand. Take the LIRR from Penn Station to Freeport. At the Freeport station, grab the JB88 bus to Jones Beach. That’s the one everybody will queue for.
