If you’re visiting New York mainly for the museums and other cultural attractions, then the Whitney is not to be missed. Opened in 1931 and dedicated to living American artists, the museum’s reputation rests mainly on its temporary shows, particularly the exhibition everyone loves to hate – the Whitney Biennial.

Shows tend to be more edgy than anything you’d see at the Guggenheim or MoMA, but the Whitney also holds about 12,000 pieces in its permanent collection by nearly 2,000 artists, including Edward Hopper, Willem de Kooning, and Georgia O’Keeffe.
