More has been written about the exterior of this new seven-story museum, designed by Tokyo architectural firm SANAA, than anything you might find inside (incidentally, it claims to be a home for contemporary art and an incubator for new ideas). As an architectural contribution to New York’s urban landscape, and a mesmerisingly modern addition to The Bowery, it certainly hits the mark.
This cutting edge building was conceived as a composition of metal mesh-clad boxes, which softly shift off the main axis to create a dynamic teetering effect. Internally, the resulting spaces are all of very different dimensions and have varying atmospheres, whilst the entrance is visible through a 15 foot tall plane of clear glass, ushering visitors in to choose various paths either up or down through the building.
