If you’ve passed through New York’s Penn Station, you’ll see that the contrast with this Beaux Arts building couldn’t be any starker – and to think that Penn was considered the more beautiful before it was rebuilt as a concrete slab. Approach Grand Central from Park Avenue on its south side and take in the triumphant facade featuring a fifty-foot pediment with statues of Hercules, Minerva and Mercury surrounding a thirteen-foot clock. Then enter for the picture-perfect view of the light flooding through the windows onto commuters, and remember to look up to the 12-story ceiling painted with stars and the gilded signs of the zodiac. The station remains one of Manhattan’s busiest transportation hubs, and free tours are given weekly on Wednesday and Friday at 12:30pm and Saturday and Sunday at 11am.
