First of all, do not read the English translation on the hotel’s website, which triumphantly claims to distress its guests. Unless you find in-room spas and jacuzzis upsetting, we’re guessing they meant de-stress. Which this nice little boutique hotel does, putting a lot of design and comfort (honestly) back into the humble hostel for an increasingly savvy generation of young travellers. There are beds hanging from the ceiling, Mac entertainment systems, freestanding tubs, faux-baroque accessories and gentler, toile de jouy-like accents depending on which of the 15 rooms you get – all products of fashion designer Luis Delgado’s eye. You can even pre-select an in-room scent from white roses, figs, chocolate or jasmine. The in-house Beauty Bar is becoming a bit of a buzz spot, and with its proximity to the Gran Via, you’re never far from places to continue your evening – unless you’re too distressed to leave your room, of course.

18.0 of 20. At first it was just the original ten hostel rooms, updated with smart new furnishings and dramatic lighting, creating bedrooms that were quirky and stylish, if still a touch on the smallish side. They’re still a fine value, and quite comfortable, but the second phase was an annexation of the property upstairs from the old hostel, resulting in five new suites. Here the Abalu gets a chance to spread its luxury wings, with the new “presidential” suite even going so far as to incorporate a jacuzzi tub.
