Walk just a few hundred meters north from Plaza de Chueca and the streetscape changes from ‘bender boulevard’ to a ‘silicone alley’ of boob and lip jobs. This area is being invaded by the yummy mummies and trust fund kids from the bourgeois neighbourhood of Salamanca right across Paseo Castellana, and they come because of spots like Sexto.

Pretty and civilised, sprinkled with designer chairs and tailor-made for features in women’s glossies and interiors mags, it also attracts a fair amount of homos like us. Sure, it’s a bit girly and could just as easily have been in London, New York or Barcelona, but sometimes a boy gets hungry or simply needs something for his Instagram feed.

On offer is a mix of traditional granny dishes and market fresh Med cooking (the tuna tataki is excellent), as well as salads, pasta and pizzas. Unless you’re very hungry, calculate about a dish and a half per head (share or order half-portions to sample) and plug any gaps with desserts (tiramisu or the flan with pumpkin and sheep’s milk cheese).

The food is good, the cocktails are well respectable too (the barman’s brought in from La Turba), and although pricey, it’s far from prohibitively expensive. Walk-ins can usually be accommodated in the casual drinks-and-nibbles zone below, but do book in advance if you want a proper table in the main dining room upstairs.
