Come here if you’re a foodie and start with the stalls on the ground floor selling raw ingredients, before moving up to more civilised restaurant style stands and bars on the second floor, with a terraced restaurant right at the top.
Like the crowd-pleasing Mercado San Miguel in Centro, Chueca’s Mercado San Antón has received a 21st century makeover, taking the market experience into a gleaming, modern multi-storey space with plenty of perusing square footage and weather protection. So cruising Chueca and engaging in some authentic food market sampling are no longer mutually exclusive options.
You’ll find no dearth of dining decisions here, with Italian sausages (you wish!), Greek nibbles, carnecerías, tropical fruits, freshly baked breads, muffins and more on offer. If you’re looking for a more immediate fix, check out the mini burgers, oyster shuckers, beer bars and sushi on the second floor.
For those who need a proper sit-down, the rooftop restaurant ‘La Cocina de San Anton’ serves great Spanish cuisine featuring (unsurprisingly) super fresh ingredients from downstairs – you even have the option of bringing your own meat. Indoor it’s all buzz and chatter, while the outdoor terrace offers great views and a busy drinks scene.
