You’re hardly going to get a bum deal staying at what was originally King Alfonso XIII’s playpen for visiting royalty back in 1912. Then again, if you’re in the market for whitewashed modernity, you’ll have a hard time trying to find it under any of the swathes of courtly glamour here. Unabashedly Old World in style, the lobby is dominated by an incredible baroque glass dome with all the fixtures and fittings taking their elegant cue from there. A staggering 468 guest rooms (so we’ve established this isn’t boutique, then) boast antique furnishings, orginal mahogany and plaster details, and of course – the trademarked Westin Heavenly Beds (read seven layers of bedding) and Baths, as well as a Marie Antoinette-style farmyard with sheep for guests to herd. Oh alright we made the last bit up. But wouldn’t it be fabulous?

The hotel is situated in the very center of the "Art Triangle" between the Prado, Thyssen & Reina Sofia museums.
